In too many towers to progress beyond rounds & call changes is difficult unless learners can visit other towers and/or attend meetings where their ability will be stretched. The Associations run courses on ad hoc basis but attendance at these is often mixed. So some other approach is needed. The centre hopes eventually to run courses for improvers. These will be to a curriculum that involves both course and homework. The aim will be to achieve a standard in the method or methods covered and success may be measured by ability to ring/conduct a touch/quarter peal. Certificates will be provided to show level of attainment.
Centre courses offered:
1. Bell Handling: There are two types of course.
a) Complete beginners; these sessions will be of several weeks duration. Students will receive one to one tuition in handling.
b) Remedial bell handling for those who have already learned to ring but are having difficulty with some aspect of handling. These will be sessions run in conjunction with beginners.
2. Plain Hunt: Candidates will either have attended a beginner s course or have been sponsored by their tower captain. There will be a theoretical content to this course and some homework will be essential.
3. Plain Bob & Grandsire: Courses are available in both methods. A prerequisite for these will be the ability to plain hunt. Attendees to these courses will be provided with some homework prior to the first session so that an understanding of the selected method is achieved prior to any practical training. The courses will be based around Plain Bob Minor or Grandsire Doubles but as the course advances triples and major may be introduced as appropriate. The aim of these courses will be for students to be able to ring competently and well-struck plain courses and touches of the method. If appropriate 1st quarters may be arranged.
4. Rounds and Call Changes: This course is offered to students wishing to be able to competently conduct a band to striking contest standards. It will cover what and how to call and how to relax and correct faults as early as possible.
5. Listening: This course is open to all standards but students will be expected as a minimum to be able to ring rounds and call changes. This course will involve much use of the simulator and recordings of good and poor striking. Students will be able to practice striking using the simulator.
6. Advanced Ringing: Courses in more advanced methods will be offered, as the demand is known.
